The Kitchen Chicago is the eighth location to join The Kitchen family of restaurants and is the first location outside of Colorado since the company started in 2004.  The Kitchen Community, our nonprofit organization, has been an active presence in the Chicago community since 2012, building Learning Gardens in over 100 schools across Chicago and reaching over 65,000 kids. The relationships built between The Kitchen Community and Chicago helped pave the way for our expansion.

The Kitchen Chicago was built by local craftsman and is located on the main floor of the landmark Reid Murdoch building, gateway to Chicago’s vibrant River North neighborhood. Built in 1914 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this former grocery warehouse stretches along the Chicago River between LaSalle and Clark streets adjacent to the Clark Street Bridge. Designed by co-founder Hugo Matheson, and Denver-based Semple Brown Design, The Kitchen Chicago’s main dining room is filled with abundant natural light and expansive views of the Chicago River and the city’s iconic architecture.

As guests enter this 6500 square foot space, a huge island bar and community dining area greet them as they stroll into the main dining room flanked by Chicago’s stunning skyline on one side, and a bustling open kitchen on the other. The restaurant’s fresh, clean interior is complemented by warm, reclaimed woods and simple touches designed to reflect the building’s history in an authentic way. The floors are composed of repurposed Oak. The bar tops and community tables are all handcrafted by an independent wood maker who reclaimed wood from Chicago’s old Zenith Building. The dark wood tables are repurposed pine from beetle kill forests in the Rocky Mountains.

The original bones of the historic building are revealed through gestures like exposed scars on concrete columns and untouched, worn plaster walls, which hint at the past. Layers of natural and historic materials, both new and found, create a warm sense of place reminiscent of home, while the restaurant’s overall design merges 1900-era details with modern elements. The community bistro features chandeliers designed and handmade by one of The Kitchen’s original co-founders, Jen Lewin. Jen Lewin Studios also created the sparkling sconces, backed by mirrors to illuminate the industrial, concrete support pillars throughout the space. The Kitchen Chicago seats 187 guests in total. A private dining room seats 40 guests and can be enclosed with oversized sliding wood and glass doors.

We focus on “community through food” by sourcing ingredients as fresh and local as possible and by building relationships with our purveyors.  The preparations are simple, fresh, clean and focused. The menu features seasonal offerings that are crafted by our talented culinary team with Johnny Anderes as the Head Chef.  The Kitchen Chicago features many of The Kitchen favorites including our hand cut Garlic Fries, Tagliatelle Bolognese, Mussels and Sticky Toffee Pudding.  Uniquely, The Kitchen Chicago menu highlights its own reflections of the Chicago community as we source as many ingredients as we can from local purveyors.

Guests have often described The Kitchen as a “home away from home” dining experience as the comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff provide a space where community can gather to enjoy great food, drink and company.
